Assist Ellendale with a House Fire

May 25, 2019

At 1232 hours, Sussex EOC alerted Ellendale Fire Co. (75) for a residential structure fire on Deer Forest Rd. just off of Dupont Blvd. Seconds later, Sussex EOC upgraded the call to a working alarm, adding Georgetown (77), Milton (85) and Sussex County EMS to the call. 75 Command under the direction of Asst. Chief Foster arrived on scene within minutes to find a home with fire on the exterior wall, "d" side with possible extension. Engine 77-4 arrived next and started extinguishment. Engine 75-3 arrived shortly after and placed a second line inservice to assist with extinguishment. Additional crews from Ellendale, Georgetown, and Milton assisted with searches and various other tasks. Asst. Chief Foster quickly scaled the incident back to the 75, 77 units and Engine Tanker 85-2. Ladder 85 provided cover up for Ellendale. Units responding, 75, 77, ET 85-2, Ladder 85, SCEMS, DSP, DSFP.

The Passing of John R. Megee

It is extremely hard to report that Lifetime Member John R. Megee answered his last call on May 20, 2019. John-John served the Department for 68 Years joining March 12,1951. During his active years John-John was an Engineer, and also served in the elected offices of Chief Engineer, Fire Recorder, and Supply Officer. John-John was loved and respected by all that had the privilege of knowing him. He will be missed by all at Milton Fire Department, Inc. John-John was preceded in death by his wife Betty Megee, who was a Lifetime Ladies Auxiliary Member, who passed March 21, 2010. Please keep Engineer & Lifetime Member John-John Megee's loved ones and closest friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Friends may call at Shorts Funeral Services at 416 Federal Street on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 11:00 a.m with the services to begin at Noon. John-John did not want a full fireman's funeral but did request that his final call be answered aboard our 1926 American LaFrance antique apparatus. Interment will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery. Neighboring companies who would like to attend are welcome. Class A uniform is optional. John-John requested no fire apparatus in the procession. Anyone with questions may contact President Johnny Hopkins.

Motor Vehicle Accident

May 13, 2019

Just after the 8 o'clock hour, Sussex EOC alerted Station 85 for a MVC on Isaacs Rd. in the area of the pond. Command 85, Engine-Tanker 85-2, and B-85 responded within two minutes. 85 Command under the direction of Asst. Chief Clendaniel arrived to find a vehicle well off the roadway into the woods with a single subject trapped. Engine-Tanker 85-2 arrived next and were assigned the task of stabilization and extrication. Crews from Engine-Tanker 2 had the vehicle stabilized, and the door remove within 2 minutes (prior to the next units arrival). The patient, who had minor injuries, was assisted to the waiting EMS crew and transported to Bayhealth Sussex. Units responding, Command 85, Engine-Tanker 2, Engine 4, Rescue 85, DSP, DSFP, Medic 101.

Second MVC of the Night

Just as crews were clearing the Isaacs Road MVC, fire police notified 85 Command they were receiving reports of a second MVC on Gravel Hill Rd., in the area of Wilson Baker. 85 Command and Rescue 85 made the response and arrived to find a single vehicle that sheared off a pole and cut the vehicle in half. Crews secured what was left of the vehicle and searched the area for any patients. No one was found and units cleared the scene, holding fire police until the arrival of Delmarva Power. Units responding, 85-8, Rescue 85, DSP, DSFP, MPD.

House Fire

May 04, 2019

Just prior to the 2 o'clock hour, Sussex County EOC alerted Station 85 for a residential structure fire at 312 Mulberry St., within the town limits of Milton. Chief Harvey (85-15) was in the area and responded to the scene. Just as Engine Tanker 85-2 was responding, and as Chief Harvey was arriving on scene, Sussex EOC upgraded the box for smoke in the structure, and added Ellendale (75), Georgetown (77), Georgetown EMS (93) and SCEMS to the response. Engine Tanker 85-2 arrived just after Chief Harvey, with their own hydrant. Chief Harvey requested crews check the building and he believed there was an electical fire in the walls. Engine Tanker 2's crew quickly opened up exterior and interior walls near an electrical outlet that was found on fire. Crews were able to contain the fire with a water can within two minutes. Chief Harvey scaled the incident back to the 85 units for smoke removal. Crews remained on scene checking the walls again and removing debris. Units responding; Engine Tanker 2, Engine 4, Engine 5, Ladder 85, Rescue 85, B-85, 77-4, 75-5, SCEMS, DSFP, Milton PD.

Motor Vehicle Accident

At 1945 hours, Sussex EOC alerted Station 85 for a MVC at the intersection of Gravel Hill Rd., & Sand Hill Rd. Chief Harvey was in the area and arrived on scene to find a two vehicle MVC with two patients. Engine Tanker 85-2, Rescue 85, and Engine 85-5 all responded and arrived on scene with crews assisting EMS, securing the vehicles, and clearing debris. B-85 transported one patient to Beebe while A-85 obtained a patient refusal. Chief Harvey placed the situation under control and returned all units. Units responding, Engine Tanker 2, Engine 5, Rescue 85, 85-15, A-85, B-85, DSP, DSFP, Milton PD

MVC involving a School Bus

April 15, 2019

At 0642, crews from Station 85 along with Medic 106 were alerted for a school bus accident on Harbeson Rd. in the area of Rust Rd. 85 Command was the first to arrived with Asst. Chief Reynolds as officer. Chief Reynolds found one student and one driver on the scene. Ambulance 85 and Medic 106 arrived and assessed both patients. Engine Tanker 85-2 arrived and secured the vehicle. Once secure, Asst. Chief Reynolds turned the scene over to DSP and 85 units cleared. One patient refused and was turned over to DSP while the second patient was turned over to officials from the school district. Units respondig, 85-8, A-85, ET 85-2, Rescue 85, DSP, DSFP, Medic 106.

Control Burn

Today, crews completed a control burn in the district.

MVC with Rollover

April 11, 2019

Just after 1730, Station 85 was alerted for a motor vehicle accident on Cedar Creek Rd. in the area of Jefferson Crossroads. Ambulance 85 arrived first to find a vehicle rolled over into a pole and a second vehice in the field. After a brief check, Ambulace 85 advised no entrapment with minor injuries. Engine Tanker 85-2 arrived and secured both vehicles. Command requested the power company to secure the damaged pole. Ambulance 85 obtained refusals. Deputy 85 (Hopkins) had Command. Units responding, A-85, ET 85-2, Rescue 85, E 85-4, DSP, DSFP.

Fred Harvey, Milton Citizen of the Year
