Duty Crew Training

Tonight, the department maintained two staffed crews from 1800-2300 plus a duty officer and EMS crew. Duty crew members trained on apparatus and ladder placement, and pulling lines. Crews also familiarized themselves with the two new school properties in town and water supply to those properties.

Commercial Structure Fire

August 05, 2021

Just prior to the 8 o'clock hours, Sussex EOC alerted Milton (85), Georgetown (77), Indian River (80), Lewes (82), Mid Sussex (91), and County Medics for a structure fire at the Allen Harim processing plant, on Harbeson Rd. 85-8 with Asst. Chief Millman (85-18) and 82-8 with Asst. Chief Stephens (82-16) responded immediately, and arrived within three minutes to find a two story industrial processing facility with nothing showing on sides "A" and "D". Chief Millman established the command and Chief Stephens was assigned interior operations. Chief Stephens entered the structure and found a smoke condition in the cold storage room. Engine 77-4 arrived first and were placed on the "D" side at their own hydrant with the fire department connection, and advised to stretch an handline into the "D" side and contact 82-16. 85-4 and Ladder 85 arrived, their crews were sent to the roof to check the parapet and outside wall on the "A" side. Tower 77 arrived and was positioned on the "A" side and assisted with roof operations. Ambulance 85, 82, and 91, along with medics established a rehab area in the parking lot. The remaining crews staged in the manpower area and assigned as needed. Crews found a fire in the alpha side wall, just under the roof line and extinguished same. Crews remained on scene for just under an hour completing overhaul and packing up. The State Fire Marshalls Office is investigating. Smoke Investigation Turns Into An Outside Fire

Just after the 6 o'clock hour, Station 85 was alerted for a smoke investigation on Milton-Ellendale Hwy in the area of Gravel Hill Rd. 85-8 (Chief Hopkins) arrived shortly after dispatch to find a property owner burning unapproved materials. Engine 85-2 arrived and extinguished same. The owner was advised of proper burn procedures. Units responding, 85-8, 85-2, 85-00, Fire Police.

MVC with Roll Over

Around 1430 hours, Sussex EOC alerted Station 85 along with Sussex County Paramedics for a vehicle accident with roll over in the area of Union St. and Bay Ave. Engine 85-5, 85-8 with Asst. Chief Millman (85-18) and A-85 all arrived shortly after dispatch to fine a two vehicle MVC with one vehicle on its roof. Crews secured both vehicles while EMS evaluated three patients. In all, two patients refused and one was transported with minor injuries. Fire police provided traffic control until the vehicles could be removed from the roadway. Asst. Chief Millman had the Command. Units responding, A-85, 85-8, Engine 5, 85-00, Rescue 85, Fire Police, Medic 111, Milton Police.

Residential Fire

May 23, 2021

Just prior to the 3 o’clock hour on Sunday May 23rd Sussex EOC alerted Stations 85, 75 (Ellendale), 82 (Lewes), 89 (Memorial), and SCEMS for a residential structure fire in the Deep Branch Woods community. 858, 852 and B85 all made the response in under a minute. 858 arrived first to find a two story single family dwelling with smoke showing from the D side of the building, 85-20 then established 85 command. 852 arrived next and deployed a hand line through the front door to extinguish the fire in the kitchen. Truck 85 arrived, laddered the building and completed search’s on the first floor. Various other apparatus arrived from neighboring departments and all worked together to complete various fire ground duties. The scene was quickly brought under control. Crews worked for approximately 2 hours before going available. Georgetown Tanker 77 provided a stand by while our crews were tied up. Units responding were 858, 852, L85, 854, 855, 8510, 753, T75, 755, L82, 822, 823, 829, T89, 895, B85, A75, ME111, ME204, FM17, DSFP.

Vehicle Fire

May 21, 2021

85 units handled this vehicle fire at Coastal Hwy & Broadkill Rd. 854 arrived to find a pick-up truck fully involved. Crews made quick work extinguishing the fire before it extended into the camper. Units responding were 854, 855, 852, A85, B85, DSP, DSFP.

Fire Alarm with a Kitchen Fire

May 12, 2021

Just after 2100 hours, Sussex EOC alerted Station 85 for a fire alarm activation in the Milton Landing complex. Engine 85-4 responded with Asst. Chief Millman (85-18). Deputy Chief Harvey arrived on scene a short time after dispatch and established Command. Chief Harvey was advised from bystanders that the resident had a fire on the stove that was extinguished with the sprinkler. Engine 85-4 arrived and proceeded to the fire apartment, where they confirmed the initial report. Crews from Engine 4 and Engine 5 completed a search of the fire apartment, and checked for extension in the surrounding areas. Utilities were secured to the fire apartment and surrounding apartments and the scene was turned over to the building manager. Units responding, Engine 4, 5, Rescue 85, Deputy 85, Milton Pd, Fire Police.

Megee the Dalmatian Returns Home

Members of the Milton Garden Club, Milton Woman's Club, and the Milton Fire Co. Ladies Aux. teamed up to beautify the new planter at the main entrance of the recently renovated firehouse. Megee, the Dalmatian named after 68 year member John-John Megee, returns home after getting a face-lift from John Oates and Barbara Wright. Megee was retouched many years ago by Mr. Oates and his late wife Myra, who made his upkeep a labor of love. A huge thank you to all who participated from the Officers and Members of Station 85.

Vehicle Fire

Just after the eight o'clock hour, Station 85 was dispatched for a vehicle fire ITAO Jefferson Crossroads. 85-8 responded with Chief Hopkins immediately after dispatch. While responding station 75 advised they had a crew available, in station if needed. Chief Hopkins advised them to respond to the scene with an engine. 85-8 arrived to find a single vehicle fully involved. Engine 85-4 arrived shortly after 85-8 and placed the front bumper line in-service to extinguish the fire. Engine 75-3 arrived seconds later and deployed their front bumper line to assist 85-4's crew with extinguishment. Shortly after command placed the scene under control and returned all units. Chief Hopkins commanded the incident. Units responding, Engines 4 and 5, Engine 75-3, Rescue 85, 85-8, B-85, DSP, DSFP. This alarm was a great example of neighboring departments working together and utilizing available manpower to serve the best interest of the public regardless of "district boundaries".

Vehicle Accident involving Motorcycle

April 28, 2021

Just prior to the two o'clock hour on April 28th Station 85, SCEMS, and DT2 for an MVC involving a motorcycle at Cave Neck Rd & Hudson Rd. 85-18 (Assistant Chief Millman) arrived and passed the command to the duty officer. 85-5 arrived and assisted with debris cleanup and patient care. DT2 was placed in-service. A-85 transported on patient to BMC. Command placed the scene under control and returned all units.

Assist Lewes with a Control Burn

April 23, 2021

Today, members from Milton assisted the Lewes Fire Department and the Forestry Service with a prescribed control burn of marsh along the Cedar St. area of Lewes Beach.
