Just prior to 2300 hours, Sussex EOC alerted Station 85 along with Ellendale (75) and Memorial (89) for a Chicken House fire at the above address. Engine 85-4 responded within two minutes of dispatch under the direction of Assistant Chief Clark. 85 Command responded at the same time with Assistant Chief Hopkins. As units were responding, Captain Trey Sapp arrived on scene to find a single chicken house with smoke showing. Engine 4 arrived and split crews having the first crew advanced a 300' bumper line into the structure and begin extinguishment, and the second crews advanced a 400' rear preconnect to back up the initial crew. Asst. Chief Hopkins arrived and established Command. Asst. Chief Hopkins had the next unit, Tanker 85, supply Engine 4, and had Engine 85-5 lay five (5) inch supply line from Cedar Creek Rd., up the driveway to the Tanker. Crews from Engine 5, and Ellendale's first two units arrived and assisted with fire extinguishment and overhaul. In all, the bulk of the fire was knocked down in about 10 minutes, with crews remaining on scene over two hours hitting hot spots, and assisting the Fire Marshall. Command released all units as they became ready. No human injuries were reported but most of the chickens in the house perished.
