Saturday, February 6, 2016
At 1934 hours, for the second time today, Sussex EOC alerted Station 85 for a gas leak at the above address. Rescue 85 arrived on scene within a minute with Asst. Chief Clark assuming Command. Again, a strong odor was detected in the area. Command immediately requested Poores to return to the scene, and requested a response from DNREC. Crews from Engine 5 and Rescue 85 began evacuating the immediate area of the leak. Displaced home owners were sent to the clubhouse in the development. Poores arrived and began the process to shut the line down and make repairs. DNREC arrived and began monitoring the air quality in the area. Crews found high explosive levels in multiple homes in the immediate area of the leak. As Poores secured the leak, crews from Station 85 and DNREC began ventilating neighboring homes. Once all the homes were deemed safe, homeowners were permitted back in. Command placed the scene under control at 2354, with the last Milton unit clearing at 0051 hours. Units on scene, Engine 85-4, Engine 85-5, Rescue 85, 85-11, 85 Command, B-85, Medic 104, DNREC 1, 2, 3, 6, DSFP, Milton Pd.
